Jose Fontourvel was born in Porlamar, Nueva Esparta State on January 16,
1943; his parents were Arturo Fontourvel and Rosa Rivero de Fontourvel. He was
married with Josefita Castro Bichara, their sons were: Hilda Rosa, Luis Arturo,
Jose and Rodulfo Gerardo. Architect, he started his profession as a Project
Assistant for a private factory. He was a Planner Designer for the Ministry of
Public Works and eventually the Director of Public Works of Nueva Esparta
State. Several works are attributed to him, among them: Cultural Complex
"Romulo Gallegos", the restructuring of Bolivar Square of Porlamar,
Fray Elias Maria Sendra Park, Guevara and Gomez Boulevard and finally but no
less important The Contemporary Art Museum Francisco Narvaez, created in 1979,
Fontourvel was inspired by the spiral structure of the famous Solomon R.
Guggenheim Museum, better known as Guggenheim Museum in New York, of the
recognised architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
He was elected Governor of Nueva Esparta State since June 11, 1978, a position he occupied until March 15, 1979 and Senator. He died in Caracas on September 1, 1992 and was buried in Porlamar on September 3 of the same year.
