Jesus Rafael Soto was born in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela on June 5, 1923 and died on January 14, 2005 was a Venezuelan sculptor and a painter. He began his artistic career as a boy painting cinema posters in his native city. He received his artistic training at the School of Plastic and Applied Arts in Caracas. After completing his studies, he was appointed director of the School of Fine Arts in Maracaibo, where he worked until 1950, when he travelled to Paris thanks to a scholarship from the Government.
Soto created the so-called Penetrables, interactive sculptures which consist of square arrays of thin dangling tubes, through which observers can walk. Soto made over 25 Penetrables in his career.
His works are divided among:
- The decoration in the ceiling of the Main Hall in Teresa Carreño Theater, in Caracas.
- The sculpture placed inside the Chacaito station from the Caracas Metro.
- “La esfera Soto” (Soto sphere), located in the Brion Square of Chacaito in the Autopista Francisco Fajardo, which was recently rebuilt.
In 1973 the government of Venezuela inaugurated the Jesus Soto Museum in Ciudad Bolivar, in his honour.
